SafeBorders — against child trafficking, across the EU
An EU Internal Security Fund project strengthening judges, prosecutors, police and frontline workers in ten countries — with Vela leading capacity building in Poland and the roll-out of a privacy-preserving AI platform.
SafeBorders is a large-scale EU initiative to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement, judicial authorities and frontline workers to combat child trafficking, and to introduce an AI-powered platform that helps identify trafficking networks and improve cross-border cooperation. Vela leads the capacity-building work in Poland and supports the roll-out of the AI tool across the partner countries.
The project delivers specialised training for police, border guards, prosecutors, judges, social workers, and legal and health professionals, with a focus on trauma-informed approaches and on recognising vulnerable child victims — particularly unaccompanied minors. It also establishes a network of specialised prosecutors for cross-border legal cooperation.
On 30 June 2025 Vela hosted the first Stakeholders' Meeting in Warsaw, bringing together ministries, police and border guard, prosecutors, NGOs and academia. In February 2026 we published the Report on Child Trafficking in Poland and launched the tender for the privacy-preserving AI Intelligence Suite, whose pilot is due for testing in 2026.
